The Igbos are the most numerous inhabitants in Eastern Nigeria. They are hardworking people and are found in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, and portions of Delta.
They have a highly rich traditional past and have long respected culture and custom in many aspects of their daily existence.
1). Igba mbọ - To constantly strive and never giving up. If you’re an Igbo man, You have no reason to give up. It is only a lazy man that is afraid of the Igbo man. To many he means threat but to me he means competition.
2. Ndiochicho- Ambition An Igbo man is no doubt a man full of ambition. He wants to be at the top or ahead of others in every field of life. He puts you on your toes all the time and gives you a run for your money . If I have business to do with an Igbo man , I don't sleep because I know that he is not sleeping .
3. Iche Uche - Deep reflection, thought and wisdom. Vigilance, critical thinking, hard work, perseverance,
risk taking and sacrifice are the antidotes to Igbophobia.
4). Njepu - The Igbo tribe are Travellers. The Igbos are said to be the most traveled of all tribes in Nigeria, their quest for success especially in business has taken them to every part of the world. To explore the world by traveling to new places seeking knowledge of new things. That’s why the Igbos are everywhere around the world.
5. Ndi Mme Mme- Igbos like to celebrate, if somebody dies the celebrate, if good thing happens like new house, new born baby or special event like new yam festival they celebrate and if nothing happens they still thank their god for preservation of their life and fortune.
6. Ndi Chi- They Strongly Believe in God. The Igbo people strongly believe in God whom they refer to as Chineke. They had this belief even before the coming of Christianity.
7. Igbo’s has claimed Israeli origin. Igbos have sometimes claimed that they may have originated from Israel. Eri, the father of all Igbos as claimed, who hailed from Israel was the fifth son of Gad, the seventh son of Jacob (Genesis 46:15-18 and Numbers 26:16:18).
8. Ndi Ego- They are believed to have strong love for money. It is believed that a true igbo man loves money. Thou they believe in making money legally and frowns at illegal money, Igbo people are likely to respect a man who has made wealthy men in his community.
9. Ndi Ezinaulo - Great Value of Extended Family. There is a great respect for the extended family in Igbo land, family matters are often treated by the elders who make up the extended family. This extended family is regarded as (Umunna).
10. Ulo-Uka. - Predominantly Christians. Because of colonization, The Igbos tribes are predominantly Christians, about 90% of the igbo tribe practice the Christianity. Catholics and Anglicans are the dominant christian denominations in igbo land.
11. Oge - Time and Season. Igbo’s Have a Calendar system peculiar to them. The Igbos invented a calendar called “Iguafo Igbo” (Igbo Calendar) so as to be aware of days and years. This calendar has four market days namely; Eke, Afor, Nkwo and Orie. These days make a week. In the Igbo calendar, four days make a week, seven weeks make one month, and thirteen months make a year.
12. Igbo Enwe EZE -Many Igbo Communities Lack Centralized Leadership. Unlike some other tribes that have centralized political structure such the sultan in the Hausa land, the igbo’s don’t have a central point of governance rather they have Igwe who also has chiefs (Elders representing the communities). The Igwe oversees the leadership of a small sect of people close to him, there are many autonomous Igwe’s with no central leadership structure.
13. Isusu- They Invented their own way of saving called ‘Isusu’. The Igbo people have a savings and mini loan system called “Isusu”, this invention is also being practiced in the Caribbean Island where it is known as “Susu”, Isusu helps to save money and have easy access to small loans.
