In line with the principles of equity, justice, and fairness, the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), the apex socio-cultural youth organization of the Ndigbo, has expressed its support and commendation for Senator Prince Chinedu Nwoko, also known as Ned Nwoko. Representing the Delta North senatorial district, Senator Nwoko has introduced a well-articulated bill advocating for the creation of an additional state in the southeast geopolitical zone to ensure political balance.
"This proposal is rooted in the concept of egalitarianism, given the clear political marginalization of the southeastern region of Nigeria, which is the only geopolitical zone with just five states. Other zones have six states, except for the North West, which has seven.
"Senator Nwoko’s bill, driven by fairness and nation-building, highlights the necessity of creating more states in Nigeria, particularly an additional state in the southeast. This would enhance the political representation and interests of southeasterners, promoting balanced political opportunities.
"The Ohanaeze Youth Council believes that all progressive and patriotic Nigerians, especially those in influential positions within the National Assembly, should support this bill to foster national unity, integrity, fairness, and equity. The proposed state, ANIOMA, should be viewed as a national benefit rather than a regional one.
"The lack of political equality and fairness is severely affecting Nigeria, contributing to its decline. The creation of Anioma State is seen as a crucial step towards achieving political balance in the country.
"While there are other proposals for new states in the southeast, such as Orlu State (comprising parts of Orlu zone, Anambra, and Abia States) and Etiti State (comprising parts of Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, and Anambra States), the advocates for Anioma State are distinguished by their commitment to selflessness, equity, and fairness.
"Furthermore, part of the ethnic-political crisis in Nigeria stems from merging smaller ethnic groups into larger ones within a single state. The creation of Anioma State, considering its unique geographic, socio-political, and ethno-cultural characteristics, would help resolve ethnic tensions in Edo and Delta States.
